Big loss to tiatr world

On Sunday, 28 Dec 2008, the tiatr fraternity lost one of their seniormost, renowned singers/stage artists.
Charles Frederick Barboza, born at Mumbai on 30th November 1930, was popularly known as Freddy Barboza in the dramatic field as well as to his friends. Hailing from Mumbai, his forefathers were from Mangalore, but Freddy was a Goan at heart. He was married to Benedicta Fernandes of Raia-Loutolim.

His work in Konkani tiatr is worth mentioning. He had written about 10 tiatrs and has staged them at several posh theatres in Mumbai in 1955. He had introduced renowned All India Radio singers like late Jerome DʼSouza of ʽMaka Gundailoʼ fame, and Henry DʼSouza of ʽYe Ye Katrinaʼ fame on stage. He had also presented many shows by Goan artists in Mangalore.
Freddy Barboza had acted in several tiatrs directed by veterans like Jacinto Vaz, Prem Kumar, C Alvares, etc. He was first introduced in Goa with Kid Boxerʼs ʽFuddarʼ in 1960.

He has acted in Konkani classic films like ʽAmchem Noxibʼ, ʽNirmonnʼ and ʽBoglantʼ, and had also acted in two telefilms, ʽFaxi Mogachiʼ and ʽSutkaʼ.
He used to run a recruiting agency in Mumbai wherein many of our very own South Goan boys were recruited to many Gulf countries. Besides that, he also hired out his fleet of tourist taxis. But with age he closed his business and led a happy retired life at Parra.

In Goa he passed his time writing many lyrics and side by side he released two albums, ʽJulianaʼ and ʽMarieaʼ.
Barboza has left behind his wife Benedicta, four daughters and one son, all settled in the Gulf and Canada. May his soul rest in peace.
