Dominic Carvalho, actor and playwright, hails from Calata, Majorda. He is the son of the late Jose Maria Carvalho and Josefa. The late Jose was a stage actor and known for the lyrics he would compose, in those days. Dominic took interest in the konkani stage from a very young age.
During schooling at St Aloysius High School, Majorda, where he completed SSC, the young boy was a regular in the songs and plays, for the school gathering. At the age of 9, his uncle, Agnelo Carvalho introduced him on the konkani stage in the tiatr titled "Dhavem Bott", where he did a comedy role and rendered solos. Later he acted opposite Querobina, well known comedian, in Inacio Carvalho's drama.

The budding actor, then continued at the amateur level with directors like Pascoal Rodrigues (an established writer/director today), Agnelo Ferrao, Saby Ferns, the late Effie de Nuvem, Ronnie Severes and others. Dominic then began producing his own shows on the amateur stage. Beginning with Favo Zalo Maka he continued with Sot, Vattsuro (which was also staged at Utorda) and some others.

In 1989, Dominic was appointed as a plant operator by the Sports Authority of Goa and then, left for the Saudi Arabia where he worked for 7 years. On return, Dominic was back to his first love. He began with "Tuzo Sangati Xonn?". The show was staged for a charitable cause, at Majorda, with professionals like M Boyer and Mini Mario. Comedian Michael encouraged the new director to present the show commercially.

This was done under the banner of J M Productions, (in memory of Dominics late father Jose Maria) and devoted to Our Lady of Valankanni. The play completed 25 shows. This was followed by "Tem Ek Sopon", "Tumkam Kitem Dium", "To Lipcho Na" and "Ti Tuka Rauta". The latest release is "Tim Odhik Bhagi", presented with a good cast that also includes, Marcos Vaz.
The show has been released and at Mapusa, a viewer awarded Dominic cash prize worth
Rs. 5000/- for the quality of the story and its moral.

He has also taken part in radio plays by J M Pereira and Saby Femandes, on the All India Radio. Many new artistes introduced by Dominic, are on the professional stage today. He advises newcomers to come forward, and show their talent, so that they can be introduced on the stage. He is thankful to the audience, for their support and also to his family, who help him in every way. At present, he is General Secretary of the St Rock's Youth Club, Calata and is a self employed electrician.

We wish you all the best Dominic, Keep on writing and presenting good plays.

Goa Bachao Abhiyan insists on briefings in Konkani

PANAJI- The Goa Bachao Abhiyan (GBA) on Thursday demanded that the Regional Plan must be kept open for study for a month for public viewing so that people can see the final outcome, and also insisted that all briefings be done in Konkani as well as English.

The demands were made at a press conference addressed by the GBA co-convenor, Ms Sabina Martins, secretary, Ms Reboni Saha and joint secretary, Mr Miguel Braganza in the city. The GBA also wanted that gram sabha decisions to be honoured in accordance with the law and reiterated its demand that the 90-day period given for people to file their objections and views should start from the date of the last briefing.

Ms Saha also made a presentation after the briefing giving an explanation of the draft Regional Plan 2021 during which she stressed that the present plan had to be checked regarding the road widths in every village and argued that at present Panaji roads were already overcrowded with no parking available even though its Floor Area Ratio was far from consumed.

The GBA has also offered to do "overlays of Village Survey maps" on the revoked RP 2011, RP 2021, and Google satellite imagery for interested groups, provided they supply them with the village survey maps or RP settlement maps 2021 as provided by the TCP.
It also wants the government to freeze the "hurriedly notified" Development and Planning Regulations, draft notified on August 14 in lieu of the ones to be notified with the Regional Plan and pointed out that extra FAR was granted in this gazetted "Interim" effort.

It warned that people should be vigilant as already Kerim-Terekhol village has discovered a golf course at Terekhol, Chicalim has found Eco Sensitive Zone-1 wetlands classified as settlement and Poinguinnim has orchard and fields of the earlier plans now acquired by GIDC and shown as "General Industries".

Konkani speaking people predominant in Karwar

Konkani-speaking people predominant in Karwar

Karwar: The electioneering is hotting up in Karwar constituency with film actors and the political leaders touring on the constituency canvassing for various parties. Karwar Assembly Constituency consists of Karwar and Ankola taluks and is the best example of social and political culture.
Ankola taluk, which is a Kannada majority area, has the majority of illiterate poor people.
But Ankola, which is known as the pride of Uttara Kannada district, is known as the “Bardoli of Karnataka” for the valiant fight put up by people participated in the salt Satyagraha during the freedom fight. Ankola and Siddapur were the two taluks which became a headache for the British Government. So, although the literacy rate is less, political awareness is high among the people.
Contrary to this, Karwar taluk has Konkani majority and literacy rate is high. Karwar, which borders with Goa, has the cultural commonality with that State. A majority of the people are affluent compared to Ankola. Still here, the money matters in the elections and the development issues take back seat.
Of the 1,89,000 votes in the constituency, Ankola has about 65,000 voters and Karwar has almost double the number of voters compared to Ankola. Before delimitation of the constituencies, Ankola and Karwar were separate constituencies and in the last elections these two were clubbed together.
